SAP SD experience before gaining SAP CRM certification?

PA281186

Have you been advised by training institutes, experienced consultants, SAP advisors or random people on forums that you need to be having extensive SAP SD (Sales and Distribution) knowledge or experience to be successful in gaining  SAP CRM (Customer Relationship Management) Certification. Well if you have and are still confused then read on.

This is one of the many questions that has been haunting individuals willing to embark into a career within SAP CRM. I was personally in a dilemma whether to  get certified or experienced in SD before moving into CRM. And this has been mainly due to the hundreds of unending discussions and debates on forums online with no concrete answers except a few.

Well having successfully gained certification in SAP CRM 7.0 with some basic configuration experience in SD whilst at University, the straight forward answer is NO. You do not need to have any experience or knowledge of SD but it is beneficial if you already have it as you would be learning various topics which interrelate with SD, but if you don’t there is no need for you to learn or know about it beforehand as everything that you need to know, starting from the basics is covered within the SAP CRM 7.0 course structure.

To elaborate further SD mainly deals with the logistics of Sales and Distribution and incorporates topics such as Sales Order Processing, Pricing, Billing, Organization Management, Transaction Processing etc.

CRM incorporates all of the above mentioned except the logistics aspect and also includes Pre-Sales activities such as Marketing, Opportunity Management and Post-Sales activities such as Service Management which are one of the core benefits of a CRM implementation within an organization.

The prerequisite I would advise is to have domain experience within CRM, having a basic understanding of the business processes within Sales, Marketing and Service. For Ex. In Sales – the stages involved from conversion of a lead to a customer. There are some technical aspects such as integration, basic development concepts required for enhancing the User Interface, therefore being from an IT or computer science background would be an advantage, but otherwise can be learned through dedicated practice and hard work.

Since it is a purely Functional certification course, the emphasis on the technical aspect is quite minimal. It would be relevant based on the role you embark on after completion of the course. For Ex. If you are on a project that requires you to be writing enhancement codes which are called BADI (Business Add Ins), then you would be required to have some basic development background.

Therefore in conclusion SD is not a mandatory prerequisite to embark on gaining a CRM Certification. With relevant domain experience, strong academic background, sheer determination, hard work and being trained by an established trainer with strong subject knowledge nothing can stop you from gaining the SAP CRM Certification.

Please do leave your valuable feedback in the comments section and let me know if there is any particular topic that you would like to be covered on this blog in relation to SAP CRM 7.0.

  1. Really gave good insight. Had a same experience from genovate. But now they say those rules has been relaxed due to market condition. Heard that companies wont prefer people with 8 or more years experience? is that true. I have choosen Genovate bangalore for training.

    Parthi

    • Hi Parthiban,

The amount of domain experience that you have cannot be undermined and is always a strong advantage and also depends on your ability to relate the same within an SAP scenario. Any company would appreciate your rich experience and the certification, but it all comes down to the point where you are able to add benefit to a company.

You need to convince the company of you willing to work in a support environment for a couple of years just to gain knowledge and your commitment to be a successful SAP Consultant.

      cheers,
      Kamlesh

    • Hi aziz,

Thank you for the comment. It will be difficult for me to provide all the details in one post and lack of time is another factor to consider, but I am working on a solution for the same and will update soon.

      cheers,
      Kamlesh.

    • Dear Mr Aziz, I am yet to appear for training, only 10 days are left, please help me with your valuable tips to become a successful certified consultant.

  3. Thanks for flickering some lights on CRM Certification.

Is that certification you are talking about is Associate Level or Professional Level?

    Please update me.

    Cheers
    Rex

  4. Hello Kamlesh first congrats for clearing certification. Secondly i also want to shift my career to SAP Application consultant. I was told by institutes to do SD first then CRM. You showed the right track. Investing in SD and then CRM will be expensive. I personally need help and suggestion from you. So if you email me back with your email ID then it will be very beneficial to me.

    • Hi Wasifur,

How much domain experience do you have within CRM? Have you done MBA or a Masters in IT with a focus on management or business subjects?

Do your certification course from SAP authorized institutes such as Genovate, Siemens, NIIT etc. I cannot guarantee the quality of training provided by these institutes but at least you are eligible to appear for certification.

These institutes will try to place you if lucky, but in the end it depends on if the company is looking to recruit a fresher.

I would advise you to think clearly before you go ahead, especially if you are already working, but if you can afford to stay couple of months or more without a job while you try to break into the SAP market after certification, then Best of luck to you from my end.

  5. hi Kamalesh,
Thank you very much for your insight into CRM and explanation about CRM.
I learnign SAP CRM and want to make career in CRM Service especially.Im from technical background(CRM UI & ABAP )..Can you send me any kind of config/blueprints etc documents related to Service or base customization..Hope you understood that i dont wanna reinvent the wheel!..I am sure these will help me understanding the business process very well.
    Thanks in advance.

  6. Hi Kamlesh,
First of all congratulations for your CRM 7 Certification.
You almost answered my query which I was about to mail you. With due respect all what you have said in your blog I wanted to share my views or thoughts which I gained after talking to few people who are CRM Certified as well as some HR professionals.

SD is widely used in manufacturing industries.Person should have engineering background and also possess manufacturing experience. He can easily understand the concepts of SD Module.
Person like me who have worked in service industry for 4yrs of my professional experience. I have worked closely with CRM process.
In such case I think what you also rightly said about domain experience which I have more of CRM side then SD so for people like me it is good to do SAP CRM Certification.
( Whatever I have said above is my thinking which may be wrong as you are in SAP for few years you might add things where I will be gain some knowledge )

Now what I need your help in…..
Before getting into 15days full time course should I read to do some homework that will help me to learn or understand whatever is going in 15days classroom training.

    Thanks & Regards,
    Kedar

    • Hi Kedar,

Having domain experience within Service module is highly valuable when you will be able to fit it within any SAP CRM Service projects you could be working on in the future.

Looking at the background you have mentioned CRM is a very good choice and as mentioned in my blog it is not mandatory to know SD for you to move into CRM.

Now coming to the certification course, just like any other course it is always beneficial to have a basic understanding of the software you will be learning, do a bit of reading online. Doing this will help you understand better as the course can be quite fast and heavy with only 15 days in hand.

Most important of all it will be beneficial if you have some hands on with the SAP software itself.

Hope this helps and Best of Luck with the certification!

      cheers,
      Kamlesh.

  7. Dear Kamlesh,

Thanks for your valuable blog. It is one of the better ones I have come across. Pls excuse me for asking this stupid question:
How easy/difficult it is to clear the certification in the 1st attempt? I have 7.5 years of exp in Customer Service and Marketing. Only worry is I will have to leave my job. So I just wanted to find out what is the percentage/chances of clearing it in the first go.

    • Gain some exposure to SAP CRM before enrolling for the course, read materials online and get a feel of the system. After enrolling into the course, work hard for 15 days and you should easily clear it in the first attempt.

  8. I HAVE 1 YEAR EXPERIENCE IN MARKETING.IF I DO CRM. DO THE COMPANIES GIVE ANY PREFERENCE TO ME.ANY CHANGES IN SCALE PLS GUIDE ME

    • Hi Venu,

Depends on if you were working as an end user within SAP in the marketing domain, that will be beneficial.
There is no hard and fast rule on wether u will get a break based on that, but it does help.
Most importantly it boils down to the effort you put in gaining strong knowledge within SAP CRM even after certification and the steps you take to gain practical experience. As a fresher you need to let the employer know how keen and motivated you are to grow within the field of SAP and what drives you.

  9. Dear Kamlesh,

Your insights on persuing CRM without SD is very helpful… as I was going thru the same dilemma, I hail from a mixed bacground of sales and customer service end eo end having an experience of close to 7 years of experience in customer life cycle management doing. would you recommend SD of CRM for a profile like mine.

    • Yes, it is difficult to get a break as a functional consultant within SAP as a fresher, but if you are keen on building a career within SAP you need to start somewhere.

Work hard you are sure to get a break. It is up to you wether you want to develop a career within SAP or accept the offers within Marketing, both fields have good scope, depends on what suits you better and where you personally feel of doing well. Your help is greatly appreciated.

    Thank you,
    Sidd

    • Hi Sid,

You have got considerable domain experience to start in SAP.

Just go through my other answers on the pre requisites before enrolling for a course.

You can try landing a job by just getting training and not certification, but it will not be easy. Depends on your persistence, hard work and a bit of luck.

      Regards,
      Kamlesh.

Appreciate your efforts and do expect similar type of blogs in the future too.

Also I am looking for some insight on the CRM Web Services and the replication of SAP ECC pricing in CRM. It would be a great help if you can provide some details for both of them.

There is strong requirement in the CRM marketspace if you have relevant 2+ years of experience.

Do your research and work hard.

I am having a 3 yrs of exp in business development, so how can SAP CRM will help me to boost my carrier….. please tell me bcoz m still confused nad also some institute where i can get the CRM certification……..

    • Well currently there is good requirement within CRM for candidates with relevant experience.

If you are willing to work hard in this already competitive market you should be fine.

In terms of certification if you got the money, safe bet to do it with SAP authorized institutes such as Genovate, Siemens etc. otherwise look for cheaper unauthorized institutes which I am not totally aware of.

  22. Hi, I am into GIS software sales (business development) and want to switch my career to SAP. Currently taking classes for SAP CRM 7.0. Would like to know what are the chances of a GIS professional getting hired as SAP CRM functional consultant. I have 4 years of experience in GIS(Geographic Information System) software sales.

  23. Good morning Kamlesh,

I read your blog about the topic “SD experience before embarking into gaining CRM Certification within SAP”.
As I am interested in being a SAP CRM Consultant I am looking for ways to come to my objective.

An institution (not a company) would pay me any SAP course which they have in their list of offered courses. They offer the following courses:

    – All logistic modules: SAP SD, SAP MM for example
    – SAP FI/CO
    – Abap
    – SAP IS-U
    – SAP BI
    – SAP Basis

unfortunately they don’t offer SAP CRM which is in my interest.
    About my person:

    – I studied Computer Science
    – I have 5 years work experience as IT Consultant, particularly in the Siebel CRM field.
    – I worked as Developer for 8 months in the Marketing and Sales department, correcting existent running applications and configuring Siebel objects, correcting eScript programms, etc. (Custimization).
    – I worked in the Siebel Operations team supporting the Siebel system, doing deployments, installing it, doing Troubleshooting, monitoring it, etc.
    – I was trained in Business Objects, Informatica Power Center, Data Warehousing, but no practical experience in the BI field
    – I have good SQL knowledge and I am good at that.

As for Siebel there are barely jobs, projects I would like to change or expand my knowledge to SAP CRM.

Everywhere I read that in order to works as a functional SAP CRM consultant you need business administration know-how, which I don’t have.
In order for me to better understand for example the Sales part of Siebel CRM I am thinking of going to the SAP SD course. There they teach you the Sales processes, in some way SCM. I know SAP SD is a logistic module for Sales, but I think some of the contents there could help me to better understand when I go later for SAP CRM (which I would pay myself).

    – What would you recommend me to do? how was it in your case?. Maybe you already had Business Administration knowledge, that’s wh you went directly for SAP CRM instead of going first for SAP SD. The SAP SD course takes 4 months.

    – Which SAP CRM courses did you visit?
I found this under the SAP AG side:

    https://training.sap.com/de/de/curriculum/crm_impl1_de-sap-crm-schlsselbereiche-crm-enterprise-de/

    and this:

    https://training.sap.com/de/de/course/tcrm10-crm-fundamentals-i-classroom-095-g-en/
    https://training.sap.com/de/de/course/tcrm20-crm-fundamentals-ii-classroom-095-de-de/

which ones would you recommend me first to visit? I would like to gain both technical and functional knowledge in SAP CRM.

In this institution I was recommended to go for SAP BI as for my computer science background but BI is not my desired area for work.

I would appreciate your tips, recommendations, suggestions as I am really confuse and worried.

    Regards
Looking forward to your answer, which would really help me to make a decision this week.

    Best Regards

  24. Hi Kamalesh,

I have 1.7 years of exp in sales & currently from the last 6 months I’ve been working with a SAP channel partner ,where I am into presales of SAP B1(Business one). I’ve opted to go for CRM. Recently I’ve been to ATOS & spoke with CRM trainer .After going thru my profile, they wanted me to join saying that the experience which I have is very much sufficient for them to shortlist my resume once the certification is done and the market for CRM is good. Next batch is going to start in July where they wanted me to complete the certification. Do you want me to wait till I gain 2 years of exp are shud I go according to their say?

  25. Hi Kamlesh,

The blog really helped me in getting clear idea to select CRM. I’ve 1.6 years of exp in sales. From the last 6 months I’ve been working for a SAP Channel partner where I am into SAP B1(Business One) pre-sales. Recently I’ve been to ATOS(previously Siemens) , CRM global trainer interacted with me & said the experience which I have is very sufficient to fetch a job with certification. They have also assured me 100% placement assistance saying that requirement for CRM consultants is high. They wanted me to join for the batch which is going to start from march -18 and the next batch from july. What do you suggest me??

    • There is no guarantee that you will secure a job within SAP CRM consulting after certification. Just like any other job it depends on if there are companies recruiting freshers within the company. If you feel strongly to build a career within SAP CRM you can go ahead but there is no guarantee…

  26. I have a strong 5 yrs domain experience, in Business development, marketing and sales.

Currently working as a Regional Manager handling Karnataka & AP business for AMD Graphics.

    I have pursued PGDBE ( marketing ) and BE ( E&C),

Can any one please guide me how to utilize this experience in IT, I’m looking at the option of SAP CRM .

which institute would be better for training, O assume training at Siemens would result in hefty fees, so kindly guide anyone from this forum.
